Shopify Plus Development

Playceholdr designs and develops Shopify Plus ecommerce for growing and established brands across New Zealand and Australia.

We work with businesses where Shopify needs to support more than a standard storefront: complex integrations, B2B, international ecommerce, larger operational requirements and teams that need more control over how the platform works.

Shopify Plus is not automatically the right answer because a business is growing. The additional cost and complexity should solve a real requirement.

If Plus is justified, we build around what makes it useful.

01 / The decision

When Shopify Plus actually makes sense

Not every successful ecommerce business needs Shopify Plus.

For many brands, standard Shopify can continue handling the business well even as revenue and order volume increase.

The decision becomes more compelling when specific requirements begin to justify the platform.

That might include
More advanced B2B requirementsLarger or more complicated ecommerce operationsInternational and market-specific requirementsSophisticated checkout or payment logicDeeper integrationsGreater staging and development requirementsMore complex organisational or operational needs
Platforms

Standard Shopify, or Plus

Standard Shopify

If standard Shopify can support the business cleanly, we will say so.

Shopify Plus

If Plus removes meaningful operational or technical constraints, the investment becomes much easier to justify.

We start with those requirements rather than assuming that a larger business automatically belongs on a larger plan.

Micro Scooters

Micro Scooters

Playceholdr replatformed Micro Scooters to Shopify Plus, bringing B2B and B2C ecommerce into a single solution and integrating NetSuite across products, inventory, customers and orders.

The project is a good example of where Plus is valuable because the requirement goes beyond the storefront itself.

02 / Approach

Shopify Plus development without unnecessary complexity

Enterprise ecommerce has a habit of becoming more complicated than it needs to be.

More systems, more apps, more custom functionality and more stakeholders can quickly turn a flexible platform into something nobody wants to change.

Our approach to Shopify Plus is the opposite.

We use Shopify’s native capabilities where they solve the requirement properly, use proven applications where they make sense and build custom functionality where the business genuinely needs something different.

That might mean a bespoke storefront, custom apps, Shopify Functions, integrations or architecture around systems outside Shopify.

The objective is not to demonstrate how much can be customised. It is to give the business enough flexibility without rebuilding functionality Shopify already handles well.

03 / B2B

B2B on Shopify Plus

Shopify’s B2B offering has expanded significantly.

Core B2B functionality is now available across Shopify plans, including company accounts, catalogues and payment terms. Shopify Plus adds deeper capabilities such as unlimited B2B market catalogues, direct catalog assignment to companies and locations, and more advanced B2B payment functionality.

That means B2B no longer automatically means Shopify Plus.

For simpler wholesale requirements, a lower plan may be enough. For businesses with a larger number of account-specific catalogues, more advanced payment requirements or more complicated B2B operations, Plus can still make a meaningful difference.

04 / Markets

International and multi-market ecommerce

For businesses selling internationally, complexity rarely comes from translating a homepage.

Different markets can create requirements around:

Shopify’s Markets functionality provides a framework for managing different customer and geographic contexts, and Shopify Plus provides additional flexibility for larger ecommerce organisations.

The important part is deciding what actually needs to vary. A market does not need an entirely different store simply because it sits in another country.

We work through where the operation can remain shared and where local requirements genuinely justify different behaviour.

05 / Systems

Integrating Shopify Plus with the wider business

For many Shopify Plus projects, the storefront itself is not the most technically difficult part.

The complexity sits between Shopify and the systems around it. That can include:

ERPInventoryFulfilment & 3PLPIMAccountingCRMLoyaltySubscriptionsMarketing platformsCustomer service

We define which system owns each type of information and how data needs to move between them.

Products, stock, customers and orders do not all need to sync in the same direction or at the same frequency.

The architecture should reflect what the business actually needs rather than trying to create a perfect real-time connection between every system.

06 / Replatforming

Moving to Shopify Plus

Some projects involve an existing Shopify business moving onto Plus.

Others involve replatforming from Magento, BigCommerce, WooCommerce or another ecommerce system.

Those are different projects.

An upgrade within Shopify may be primarily about enabling functionality the business now requires.

A full migration involves a much wider set of decisions around products, customers, historical orders, URLs, integrations, applications, content and operational change.

Common questions

What is the difference between Shopify and Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus is the enterprise tier of Shopify.

The difference is not simply that it can handle a larger store. Plus adds capabilities aimed at more complex ecommerce organisations, including additional B2B functionality, higher operational flexibility, staging environments and other enterprise features.

Whether those differences justify the additional cost depends on the business.

When should a business move to Shopify Plus?

When a specific requirement makes the additional platform capability commercially useful.

That may be deeper B2B requirements, international complexity, advanced payments, integrations or other operational requirements that are becoming difficult to handle cleanly on the current plan.

Revenue alone is not a particularly good reason.

Do I need Shopify Plus for B2B?

Not necessarily.

Shopify now provides many core B2B features on plans below Plus.

Plus becomes more relevant where you need more advanced catalogue assignment, payment functionality or larger and more complex B2B structures.

The requirements should determine the plan.

Can you upgrade an existing Shopify store to Plus?

Yes.

Sometimes the existing storefront can continue with relatively little change and the project is primarily about enabling new operational functionality.

In other cases, moving to Plus happens alongside a larger redesign, integration or architecture project.

We assess the existing store before recommending the scope.

Can you migrate an enterprise store from Magento or another platform to Shopify Plus?

Yes.

A migration can include product and customer data, historical orders, URLs and redirects, integrations, applications and the redevelopment of the storefront.

The migration needs to be planned around both the customer experience and the operational systems behind it. See our Shopify migration services.

You might already be on Shopify and trying to decide whether Plus is justified, planning a migration from another platform or dealing with an ecommerce operation that has become more complex than the current setup can comfortably support.

We can work from requirements and platform assessment through design, development, migration, integration and launch.

And if the requirements do not justify Shopify Plus, we will tell you that too.
